Tips on wrapping with fabric

1. Choose the right size wrap for your gift
If the wrap is too small, the gift will poke through and if the wrap is too large, there will be too much excess fabric and the gift will feel bulky. A 27”X27” cloth is great for wine bottles, small to medium sized boxes, books, and flowers. For an over the shoulder handbag use a cloth at least 36”X36”.

2. Getting started
Wrapping with cloth works best if the cloth is square. Think origami (always done with small squares of paper). Almost all wraps start with the gift placed in the center of the cloth on a diagonal.

3. Gathers and knots
Tuck excess fabric in as you fold and tie knots so that you have even gathers and less bulk. Most wraps work with square knots that are securely tied but not so tight that the recipient has a hard time opening the gift.

4. Where to get your wraps
Furochic wraps are 27”X27” a standard furoshiki size and are ready to go in modern patterns and vibrant colours. There are a number of traditional Japanese furoshiki available online and in specialty Japanese shops. Square scarfs make great wraps and become part of the gift. Customize your wrap by making it yourself. Choose fabric that reflects the gift and event, cut it into a square, turn the edges over and stitch along the edge. Look for remnants in the sale section as they are often large enough to make a wrap.

5. Make a no-sew wrap
Use pinking shears to cut your fabric. This will prevent the edges from unraveling and will save you time.

6. Experiment with fabrics
For formal occasions and expensive gifts, use a wrap made of dupioni silk, embroidered silk, taffeta, velvet or satin for a luxurious effect.

7. Add embellishments
A gift wrapped in fabric feels special, it reflects the thoughtfulness put into the gift and becomes part of the gift. To further enhance the “wow” factor, decorate the gift with embellishments such as trinkets, toys, jewellery, flowers and ribbon. Attaching embellishments is easy with fabric wraps as you can clip or pin onto the fabric or use the knots to hold them in place.

8. Handy wraps
Carry a wrap at all times in your purse, you will be surprised at how many times you end up using it. Cotton wraps are the best and can be used to sit on, wrap and protect purchases, clean up messes, dry off surfaces, become an impromtu tablecloth or head scarf. The wraps are easy to keep clean and can be machine washed and ironed.
